Lord of the Flies is written by William Golding and is about a group of boys that get stranded on an island with no adults after their plane crashes. Soon they form a tribe with Ralph as their elected chief.
Not long after the crash rumors spread of a beast on the island. This rumor terrifies the "littluns" and gives them nightmares while they sleep.
Eventually Jack, the leader of the hunters, leaves with most of the "biguns" and makes his own war tribe. They are referred to by the others as savages because they have resorted to violence rather than helping to build up a society on the island.
Jack's new tribe goes into a frenzy at one of their feasts when Simon, a boy who had been missing for about a day, crawled into their camp. He was beaten to death by the boys after he was mistaken for the "beast". Days after that Jack's tribe raids Ralph's tribe and takes Piggy's glasses. Piggy is Ralph's best friend on the island but is almost blind without his glasses. The glasses are used to make fire. That morning Ralph, Piggy, and the two twins Sam and Eric leave their tribe to talk to Jack about what they did.
When they they get there Piggy is killed when Roger pushes a rock down a mountain onto him Sam and Eric are captured by Jack's tribe and forced to join.
In the morning after, Jack's tribe goes on a hunt for Ralph. In the process they catch the whole island on fire but the fire signals a ship. They are eventually all rescued before Ralph is killed.
I chose this book because I had been wanting to read it for a while and I thought it would be interesting to see what may happen if a group of kids had to survive without adults. I found the book interesting an it did show a lot about how people can change when they are free to do whatever they want and have to take care of themselves.
