Lord of the Flies Science Fiction
Lord of the Flies is considered science fiction because of the fact that these boys are stranded on an island by themselves. They are in a closed world with no other power over them and they are free to do anything they want. They are stuck on the island by themselves after their plane crashes and they have no way of contacting the outside world other than lighting a fire and hoping that a ship will see it.
Lord of the Flies Author's Purpose
Lord of the Flies is written to show how deep within all of us there is an element of evil. This is represented by the actual Lord of the Flies in the book. The "Lord of the Flies" represents the evil inside all of the boys. Golding wanted to show in Lord of the Flies the choice that we make between civilization and order and evil and anarchy. The book shows human evil throughout the book and tells how we have to make a choice to try to better society and help others or to seek power over others and work to fill our own agendas. The good power in the book is represented by Ralph, Simon, and Piggy, who work to try to make things work on the island and eventually get them all rescued. The evil power in the book is represented in the book by the Lord of the Flies, Jack, Roger, and the beast. Jack and Roger work to gain power over the children of the island and to extinguish all that stand in their way. The Lord of the Flies is the evil that lies within all of us in our instincts and the beast is the fear that compels us the do evil.

Lord of the Flies Character Compare and Contrast
The two characters that I am going to compare and contrast with normal people is Ralph and Jack. Ralph and Jack are almost two completely opposite characters.
Jack is an evil, sinister, war lord that preys on the week and all who stand in his way. He at one point was a "normal" person but when he was let free to do as he wanted he showed how he really was. Jack used to be a choir boy and never seemed to be any different from anybody else. He turned eventually thought after he began to form his own tribe. His first victim was Simon who was savagely beaten to death. He then ended up hunting the remainder of the people who had not joined his tribe. Jack is like a Hitler almost in that he gained the trust of people then turned the other tribe into a scapegoat and waged war on his own people. Judging by Golding's background he may have been trying to do this because this was written not long after World War II and is set during the war.
Ralph is the polar opposite of Jack. Ralph fights to restore order and to get the group rescued. He tries to avoid violence at all cost and is concentrated on what will be best for the group which is not alway what people want to do. Ralph is much like a normal person but he has a leadership attitude. He knows what has to be done and does all that is necessary to do what needs to be done for the group. He is a powerful leader unlike most people but he fights for good. He has the mentality to lead others and do what needs to be done.

Lord of the Flies Societal Issue
Lord of the Flies shows the darker side of human nature. It addresses almost anyone under the right circumstances can become "evil". It shows that we are not all as good as we would like to think we are when we do not have to face any consequences for our actions. Lord of the Flies reveals that it is almost impossible for us to rid ourselves of war and evil. It shows us that when we can do things under the correct circumstances that we never thought we would do and it shows that there are evil people in this world and that there is no real way to get rid of evil in our world.
Lord of the Flies Summary
Lord of the Flies is written by William Golding and is about a group of boys that get stranded on an island with no adults after their plane crashes. Soon they form a tribe with Ralph as their elected chief.
Not long after the crash rumors spread of a beast on the island. This rumor terrifies the "littluns" and gives them nightmares while they sleep.
Eventually Jack, the leader of the hunters, leaves with most of the "biguns" and makes his own war tribe. They are referred to by the others as savages because they have resorted to violence rather than helping to build up a society on the island.
Jack's new tribe goes into a frenzy at one of their feasts when Simon, a boy who had been missing for about a day, crawled into their camp. He was beaten to death by the boys after he was mistaken for the "beast". Days after that Jack's tribe raids Ralph's tribe and takes Piggy's glasses. Piggy is Ralph's best friend on the island but is almost blind without his glasses. The glasses are used to make fire. That morning Ralph, Piggy, and the two twins Sam and Eric leave their tribe to talk to Jack about what they did.
When they they get there Piggy is killed when Roger pushes a rock down a mountain onto him Sam and Eric are captured by Jack's tribe and forced to join.
In the morning after, Jack's tribe goes on a hunt for Ralph. In the process they catch the whole island on fire but the fire signals a ship. They are eventually all rescued before Ralph is killed.
I chose this book because I had been wanting to read it for a while and I thought it would be interesting to see what may happen if a group of kids had to survive without adults. I found the book interesting an it did show a lot about how people can change when they are free to do whatever they want and have to take care of themselves.
