"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 33 Summary

Chapter 33 is about the funeral of Uncas and Cora. It is held in the Delaware tribe and they are buried in Delaware tradition. Both of their bodies are put out on display. Uncas is put in a chair as if he is still alive looking out at his tribe. Cora is layed on the ground with her eyes closed. At the end Duncan, Alice, and Monro leave with Montcalm. Hawkeye and Chingachgook stay and watch the burial of Uncas.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 32 Summary

In chapter 32 the attack against the Hurons occurs. There is a lot of fighting in this part of the book. Towards the end Hawkeye, Duncan, David, and Uncas chase Magua through the cave that had recently been the place that Alice had been inhabiting. At the end Cora stops and says she will go no farther. Magua tells her to go or he will kill her. She does not answer him. Then one of the indians with Magua stabs her. Uncas catches up with them and is killed fighting Magua. Then Hawkeye shoots him as he tries to run away.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 31 Summary

In chapter 31 Uncas and Hawkeye try to make up a plan to free Cora. Uncas sends off a boy to get Hawkeye's gun. The boy is shot at and his arm gets scraped by the bullet. At the end of the chapter the plan is made and gone over with the tribe. They then set off to free Cora.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 30 Summary

In chapter 30 the "trial" for Uncas continues. When the Tamenund says that Uncas will be killed the tribe circles him and taunts him before they kill him. Then one pulls Uncas's shirt off, revealing the symbol of a turtle on his chest. They learn that he is one of the Mohicans and do not hurt him. Then Magua takes Cora and says that she will become his wife. He then says that in exchange for Cora, Hawkeye will have to die. They agree but Magua does not and takes Cora with him.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapters 8-10 Vocab

1. Remonstrance- Protest. The man did not remonstrance when he was sentenced by the judge.
2. Enumeration- Name one by one or list. "Let me enumerate the things that you did wrong," said the man.
3.Tumult- A violent and noisy commotion. There seemed to be no source for the tumult.
4. Pious- Hypothetically concerned with virtue or religious beliefs. The man was pious about joining the army.
5. Precipitous- Extremely steep. The hill was almost too precipitous and slippery for them to climb.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 29 Summary

In chapter 29 the party is judged by the chief. The chief decides to let Hawkeye, Duncan, and the sisters go. When they ask to let Uncas go someone said that he was to be kept for torture for befriending the English. Then it is up to the chief to decide whether or not to let him go.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapters 5-7 Vocab

1. Soliloquy- A person who talks to themselves even if it is obvious to others. The Soliloquy was avoided by most people because he was always talking to himself.
2. Recompense- To repay someone for something. The old man recompensed everyone that had helped him through his life.
3. Imp- Little Devil or Demon. "These imps will pay for what they have done to us," said the soldier.
4. Spectral- Ghostly in resemblance. The man appeared ver spectral in the darkness of the house.
5. Menial- Lowly and sometimes degrading work. The work that the man had to do to pay off his debt was very menial.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 28 Summary

In chapter 28 the Hurons go to the Delawares' tribe. When they go there Magua has a conversation with a Delaware chief. Afterwards an old man is taken out from his house. He is said to be more than 100 years old. He is revered as the most just chief of all the indians.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 27 Summary

In chapter 27 the Hurons go in search for Uncas, Hawkeye, and David. When they notice that their prisoner is gone they make a call to wake all the villagers up. They then go and look for Magua. They eventually find him in the cave where Hawkeye had tied up and gaged him. They then organize a search party. At the end of the chapter Chingachgook hides and uses a beaver skin to divert the attention of the Hurons. Then he comes out of hiding.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 26 Summary

In chapter 26 Hawkeye and David find Uncas. They find Uncas tied up in a hut in the middle of the village. They go into the hut, Hawkeye dressed as a bear, and with David talking to the indians to divert their attention. They free Uncas and begin to flee the village. On their way out they are spotted by the indians.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 25 Summary

In chapter 25 Duncan and Hawkeye find Alice. Duncan is taken to a cave where there is a sick woman that he is supposed to "heal." While there the tribe's pet bear stays there with him. As it turns out, the bear was Hawkeye using the skins of the dead bear to hide himself. They then dress Alice in indian attire to sneak her out of the tribe claiming that she was the sick woman and that she needed to be taken into the woods to heal.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 23 Summary

In chapter 23 the "trial" against Uncas continues. During which Mogua arrives unexpectedly. He rules that Uncas be killed in the morning. Then Duncan is taken to heal a sick woman. On his way there he encounters the tribe's pet bear. The bear follows them to the woman who seems to be paralyzed and is totally indifferent to the world around her. There is also David there who is singing hymns and the bear seems to be humming to his singing.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 22 Summary

In chapter 22 Duncan and David enter the indian tribe. Shortly after them entering some indians come back with scalps that they had taken from those that they had killed. It is unknown who was killed though. Then they bring back two prisoners, one who's features are not seen by Duncan and the other who is Uncas. The one flees into the forest while Uncas stays back and does not shame himself in showing fear. They then take him to a hut that is evidently used as something close to a courthouse. There they kill the "coward" that had gotten Uncas captured and then afterwards all in the hut leave for some reason. Leaving the old chief, Uncas, and Duncan alone.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 22 Summary

In chapter 22 the group finds David and uses his new knowledge to help them find the missing sisters. He tells them that the sisters where taken to two separate tribes. The party then decides to paint Chingachgook the colors of that tribe so that he can enter without being seen as a threat. At the end of the chapter the group is about to try to free one of the sisters.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 21 Summary

In chapter 21 the group is still searching for the missing sisters. They do gain the trail of the sisters and their capturers. They follow it to an indian town or tribe that seems to be deserted. They then saw a strange group of indians proving that the tribe was not deserted. They also see an indian unarmed and walking clumsily within sight of them. Hawkeye then goes up behind him to attack him. At the end of the chapter Hawkeye pulls the man into a bush but can be heard talking friendly towards him and calling him a friend.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 20 Summary

In chapter 20 the party leaves the fort and uses a canoe to go in search of the two missing sisters. While on the lake they come in contact with several Hurons with canoes. They then have to participate in combat with the Hurons from their canoes. During which, Hawkeye shoots one with his rife and causes the indian to drop his rifle into the water. It causes no farther harm to him though. They then stop on the shore of the lake and make a fake trail for the Hurons to track when they get there. Then they left in their canoe and went to some other location on the shore of the lake.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 19 Summary

Chapter 19 is about the night preceding the search for the two sisters. During the night the party seems to be stalked by someone or something. Uncas then sneaks off and shoots the intruder. Afterwards there is some debate between Hawkeye and the Mohicans, most likely about which path to travel by in the morning though it does not specify.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Vocabulary Two

 Indurated- Accustom. The veteran was indurated to the horrors of war while the new recruits were shocked by such inhumane acts. Guile- Insidious cunning in attaining a goal. The man used the utmost guile in hunting the deer. Countenance- Appearance.  The homeless man had a very rough countenance. Accoutrement- Clothing. The lost hiker's accoutrement was torn and dirty after being stranded in the forest for five days. Girdle- Sash. The indian's girdle had a tomahawk and knife attached to it.                                                      

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 18 Summary

Chapter 18 is about the party, now consisting of  Heyward, Monro, Hawkeye, Chicagook, and Uncas, going  out in search of the two sisters a few days after the massacre. They go out in search of the two girls and find things like parts of the girls' garments and jewelry. They also concluded that David had went to chase after the girls' capturers.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 17 Summary

Chapter 17 is about the English leaving the fort and surrendering it to the French. During the exodus they are attacked by thousands of indians. The indians proceed to just massacre everybody. The image of a mother and her baby being brutally murdered by a large indian before the attack is very powerful and instills a feeling of disgust and hatred towards the indians. During the attack the indians kidnap Alice and Cora and ride off with them while David chases after them.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 16 Summary

Chapter 16 is about the surrender of the fort to the French. The chapter mostly focuses on the conversations between Heyward and Munro. Mostly about Heyward's diplomacy with the French. In the end Heyward and Munro go and see the Frenchman together and end up surrendering the fort after realizing that that is the best option.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 15 Summary

In chapter 15 Hawkeye is captured by the French and taken back to the British fort after a truce is called between the two forts. I am not sure what happens to him afterwards though after he has a conversation with the sisters. Also the British General sends Heyward to the French fort to take his place in talks about surrender.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 14 Summary

In chapter 14 the party makes it within sight of the fort. Before they see a French soldier who is thought hostile by Chicagook. He kills the friendly soldier. This causes the French to attack the British fort. The party uses the smoke from the cannons to maneuver without being seen. At the end of the chapter the two sisters are reunited with their father.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 13 Summary

In chapter 13 the party comes to spend the night at an old house that is uninhabited. They were led there by Hawkeye, who had been there before, and battled the Hurons. After they wake up in the morning they can hear people approaching. They are Hurons that actually make it into the place that they are hold up at but leave without seeing any of the party.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 12 Summary

Chapter 12 is about the battle and afterwards. During the battle only one of the Hurons escaped and none of the members of the party were hurt. Hawkeye and the Mohicans had not went to get help when they disappeared. They instead followed the Hurons and their prisoners. This proved to be what saved them. Afterwards the group stopped to eat and drink at a nearby spring then left.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter 11 Summary

Chapter 11 is about the night after the capture. During the night the indians plan to avenge one of their slain comrades by killing the members of the party the same way they had killed him. Before they kill them though they give Cora and Alice the choice to live if Cora becomes the Chief's wife and Alice will be let home. They choose both to die. The chief then throws a tomahawk at Alice and misses. Then Duncan gets himself free and jumps onto the indian. He slips from Duncan's grasp but is then shot by someone unknown.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter Ten Summary

Chapter ten is about what happens after the party is captured. Afterwards they are taken from the cavern that they had been receding towards the indians' tribe. They traveled through the woods on horseback until they had found a clearing on top of a hill at the end of the day to set up camp at.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter Nine Summary

In chapter nine most of the party is captured by the indians. The whereabouts of Hawkeye are unknown and the two Mohicans went to get help. More than likely that is where Hawkeye is. The party is captured after Duncan sees the old guide and shoots at him with a pistol and misses. After that the indians come in from both sides of the cavern and capture them.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Vocabulary

Irksome- Irritating or annoying. The small bugs flying into my eyes was becoming very irksome. Ex Parte- One sided. The man's argument was ex parte. Intonation- Pitch and pattern of one's speech. The man's intonation varied a lot as he talked. Veneration- Reverence. The crowd showed much veneration toward the speaker. Circumlocution- Speaking indirectly, using more words that necessary. The man spoke in a way of circumlocution.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter Eight Summary

Chapter Eight of my book is about the battle between the Indians and the party. It mostly focuses on the fighting between them and the dialogue of the characters as they realize that the Indians are getting the upper hand and that they may not have much time to turn things around. Towards the end they notice that they are running out of options and most of the people begin to focus on the fact that they may not make it.

"The Last of the Mohicans" Chapter Seven Summary

Chapter seven is about the morning after the night in the cavern. In the morning there is a skirmish between an Indian tribe, most likely the guide's tribe, and the party. In the beginning Heyward is injured and is knocked unconscious for a few minutes. The Indians suffered several casualties, two in hand to hand combat with Heyward and Hawkeye.

Chapter six is about the night that the party spends in a cavern by a creek. While in the cavern they hear this sound several times that is described as being like nothing any of them have ever heard before. They say that it sounds like nothing that should exist of Earth and is not a sound that could be made by a human. They can find no source of the sound.
